Mr. Mitnick is a convicted felon whose illegal activities have included the interception of electronic communications, computer fraud, wire fraud, and causing damage to computers. He was arrested in the Fall of 1988 for stealing a long-distance security software source code from DEC. His crimes cost DEC an estimated $4 million in damages. He pleaded guilty to “possession of unauthorized telephone access devices” and “computer fraud”, and was sentenced to a year in jail without parole.The break in at DEC was not Kevin Mitnick’s first, and would not be his last. In 1982 he was caught stealing technical manuals from Pacific Bell in an attempt to learn more tactics for phracking (making unauthorized long distance phone calls). He was sentenced to probation, but he violated it by hacking into a local university. As a result, he was sentenced to six months in jail.On Christmas Day 1994, Mitnick hacked into the home computer of Tsutomu Shimomura, a well known security expert. ...
