Jacht op Chinese high-tech spionnen leidt tot ontslag
Een aantal maanden geleden waarschuwde verschillende landen voor een grootschalige internetaanval die mogelijk uit China afkomstig was. De aanvallers gebruikten speciale Trojaanse paarden om vertrouwelijke gegevens en bedrijfsgeheimen te stelen. Een Chinese hackergroep die zich bezighoudt met het stelen van documenten werd door de FBI "Titan Rain" genoemd. De groep wist in te breken bij verschillende grote Amerikaanse bedrijven, waaronder Lockheed Martin en verschillende laboratoria.
De cyberspionage activiteiten werden ontdekt door Shawn Carpenter die al z'n aandacht wijdde aan het opsporen van de groep. Hij wist de zelfs routers in China te localiseren die de groep gebruikte voor hun aanvallen. De informatie die hij verzamelde speelde hij door aan de FBI. Z'n opdrachtgever kwam hierachter en ontsloeg Carpenter, die nu weer als security adviseur actief is, maar nog altijd denkt hij aan Titan Rain. TIME Magazine heeft het complete verhaal.

verspelen.

Het gedrag van de FBI is inderdaad niet netjes als het zo is gegaan als
weergegeven.
Ik kan me ook voorstellen dat hij het "informantje spelen" zo leuk vond dat
hij ongevraagd acties ondernam en de FBI niet afwist wat hij uitspookte om
aan de informatie die hij doorspeelde te komen.
Als het waar is dat China hier achter zit, zijn de
Amerikanen dom, als ze geen hackers inzetten om zich te
verdedigen.

Ja inderdaad. De boodschapper van het slechte nieuws krijgt ineens te
horen dat HIJ de kwade pier is, in plaats te zeggen "dank je voor de
waarschuwing".
