ID Verification & VPN Threats in New York (NYCOSA)

New York State lawmakers are proposing a new bill that would require identity verification under the guise of "age verification" in order to use basic functions of the internet, including direct messaging, video game matches, and more.

The proposed bill would likely spread through the rest of the Internet like a plague, with video game and internet companies ceding to the strictest law for easiest compliance. We also think the bill creates avenues for monopolization of services, as account age may stand-in as an alternative.

While better than ID verification, this creates avenues where it's even more difficult for new competitors to join the market. Long-term, we think this legislation goes after VPNs. In many ways, this mirrors the UK Online Safety Act.

Ja,

Mooie herinneringen aan internet zoals het was:

IRC, Gopher en ga zo maar door
Hotline heb ik nog een tijdje gehad.
De websites van Angelfire, een 56k modem.
Ieder bedrijf een eigen smtp-server, exim dovecot
En een hele lange lijst zo.
Wat blijft er nu over, Big Tech, Big Data, Big Brother. jezelf moeten identificeren om je eigen/personal computer te mogen openen. Ieder toets die je indrukt wordt ergens in de vs geregistreerd daarna.
